in israel including an israeli soldier who died in a rocket strike today. we want to get more from nbc correspondent, ayman mohyeldin, who joins me from gaza. you reached out to the egyptian authorities about what's taking place, when this deal will be announced. what are you hearing about the possibility of that happening this hour? >> well, right now what we're hearing from egyptian officials is that they're still working to finalize that agreement. there are some areas where the gap between the two sides has been narrowed, but there are still some very important issues that have not been addressed. you know, we are talking about trying to solve one of the most complex issues here in gaza. that has to be do with the blockade. there's no indication that israel will try to do that any time soon. they want to try to divide or break up the truce into different stages. first, an immediate cessation of violence on both sides. that could pave the way for talking about some of the more complex issues that both sides want to address. right now, it doesn't seem they're going to go for all of t

that leave the quest for peace? ♪ >> jennifer: leaders from israel and gaza met in egypt today to discuss a possible drawdown with u.s. secretary general. for now, though the fighting continues. israeli air strikes killed nearly 40 people today, groups in gaza respondented by shooting nearly 100 rockets in israel. and on the israeli side of the border things appeared remarkably calm today. this picture has caused a stir online. it shows israelis watching passively as in-coming missiles sail over head. so why to israelis feel so comfortable out in the open as missiles fly above them? because of something called the iron dome. it's a defense system that uses radar to detect in-coming rockets and determine where they will land. if it is headed towards a populated area the gunner shoots the missile out of the sky. it is particularly good at detecting the smaller, older rockets that the palestinians use. iron dome has had an incredible 85% successful rate against the 300 rockets the palestinians have fired. the gulf missiles intercepted less than 10% of their target. iro

are continuing tod today. they also are continue to attack rocket stockpiles from gaza. israel's goal, of course, is to stop, to prevent hamas from attacking israeli citizens with its rockets. there have been about 850 attacks this year, 100 in the last week alone, so that's what israel wants stop. at the same time, hamas has been retaliating today. at least 130 rockets fired from gaza into israeli cities. about 50 of those rockets were intercepted by israel's homemade antimissile defense system, the iron dome, but one did get through. it hit the israeli town and killed three israeli citizens, and now israel is using that, of course, to threaten more attacks. the southern commander of the israeli army said that the assassination yesterday of ahmed jabbaarie, which kicked all this off, the militant leader, he says is just the beginning. meanwhile, israeli troops are gathering on the edge of gaza. tanks have been reported moving south. a ground invasion is possible. it's definitely not what israel wants, but israel's defense minister ehud barak said this morning that israel would do anything, and

in the middle east right now. a fifth straight day of very heavy fighting. israel making new operations to stop a relentless barrage of rockets. israel is fully prepared to, quote, expand its offense. that may mean a ground invasion of the gaza strip. david lee miller is live on the israel-gaza border. has diplomacy made a difference at all? >> we're about a mile from the border. a few moments we saw more rockets fired by militants into israel. as we gazed overhead. we saw the iron dome system doing its job. three of those rockets shot down just a few moments ago. in total today, at least 75 rockets were fired into israel. three of them targeting the city of tel aviv all 6 those intercepted. it's worth noting the shrapnel from one intercepted rocks fell to the ground and hit a car. there were no serious injuries. seven israelis were injured and dozens more had to be treated for shock. there was a relentless barrage in southern israel, they were about 15 rocketed attacks in a very short period of time. we talked to the military police spokesman and he believes it's possible that the militants ar
